Getting to know the Spaces Model
The Model proposes 4 Spaces of human viewpoint:
1 The ESSENCE, within and unique to the individual, "Inner Space", or the "mind's eye". One's hopes dreams, aspirations, contemplations etc.
2 DOMESTIC or "personal space", the immediate surrounds, in company or context with others in your group together, like dinner tables at the restaurant.
3 “OUTDOORS Space”, like the Railway Yard, or the Main street intersection, these belong to no one in particular and yet everyone.
4 Community Space. This might be the hardest space to conceive of, it is not so much a physical space, but the combined space of a society, its role and portrayal. The interconnectedness of all things related to a society. Like a ball game, the football might be kicked about a physical field but the event more often represents a broader “community space”, a clash between teams and community’s, and the roles of all players, and supporters. Or, great historic moments, like the fall of the Berlin Wall, amounts to Community Space. It refers to people’s professional and vocational roles, the police or fire engine, or Nurses turning up to an event, then brings in “community space”. It includes political and media events and includes values that bond people into a groups & socities. The internet is a type of community space.
In this picture of a famous kiss in amongst a football riot we have a graphic example of “personal space”, (DOMESTIC) the embrace of togetherness defining a couple’s space, distinct from their surroundings. Also, on show are the stark OUTDOOR public streetscape surroundings. In the foreground and backgrounds are COMMUNITY space figureheads of society’s authority, riot police. For those aware of the event, it is a football riot, a community event. The stunning photo invites the reader into contemplation of the moment, within the mind’s eye (ESSENCE); it provokes gentle voyeurism and inner reflection, and suggests a disturbed private space for the couple in the photo. This photo demonstrates an example of a full range of spaces all interconnecting.
